Solomun Ibiza Residency Personal Statement

Six successive seasons of Solomun +1 Ibiza 2018, roll on Sundays at Pacha…

First turning heads with his label-based night, Diynamic Neon Nights, back at Sankeys in 2012, Bosnian-born selector Solomun has since gone from strength to strength. Formerly crowned DJ of the Year by Mixmag and with his own residency, Solomun +1 Ibiza 2018, to his name, the world is now his oyster.

Now six seasons deep into his Sunday night residency at the cherries club, the Diynamic chief will commence his 2018 campaign on 27th May. Steamrolling through 21 memorable summer weeks, Solomun will conclude his season at his closing party on 14th October.

The concept behind Solomun +1 Ibiza 2018 is a simple, yet special one. Each week, he will invite one special guest to play alongside him for the entire night, so they are able to be part of the party from beginning to end. This allows him and his plus one to take his guests on a journey as he and his plus one explore a variety of avenues from different genres to create the perfect atmosphere inside Pacha Ibiza every Sunday.

With line-ups yet to be confirmed, last year saw Solomun joined by several illustrious guests including Mano Le Tough, Patrice Baumel, Ame, Damian Lazarus, DJ Hell, Michael Mayer, John Talabot, Dixon, Dubfire, DJ Tennis, Joseph Capriati, Acid Pauli, Butch, Superpitcher, Sven Vath, Mind Against, Matthew Dear and Konstantin Sibold.

Keeping as firm hold on the Sunday night slot at Pacha, Solomun +1 Ibiza 2018 remains one of the most in-demand concepts the island has to offer.

The German stalwart is coming off one of his biggest summers in Ibiza yet.

The name Solomun is synonymous with deeply emotional dance music and transcendent DJ sets. His long-winded performances -- known for their engrossing, story-like arc -- are matched in quality only by his acclaimed studio creations.

The Hamburg-native spends his summers in Ibiza where he commands a weekly residency at Pacha. Now in its third season, his Solomun +1 party has become one of the island’s more buzzworthy events. This year, for instance, saw Solomun host house and techno heavyweights like Dixon, Sven Väth, Âme and more.

Billboard Dance Picks: Steve Angello, mau5trap, Solomun & More

Aside from serving as an icon in the DJ world, Solomun runs one of the bigger dance music imprints in Germany: Diynamic. Since its inception in 2006, the label has gained a reputation for its refined, cinematic deep house sound.

The imprint’s newest release is a four-track EP from Johannes Brecht and Stimming titled Stekker EP, including a special edit from Solomun which Billboard is exclusively premiering below. As he does so well, the Diynamic boss instills a touch of magic into his edit of “Breathe!,” transforming the 9-minute single into a blissful, Balearic gem.

Billboard caught up with Solomun to talk everything from his summer in Ibiza, to the new Stekker EP on Diynamic.

For those attending Amsterdam Dance Event, Solomun and Diynamic will host a special showcase at ADE on October 15.

Where are we speaking to you from?

I am in Ibiza where I will play today the Closing of Destino, an outdoor venue, where I had my second residency of the summer with my new Solomun+LIVE concept.

How has your Pacha residency in Ibiza been this summer?

We are really happy with the evolution of our “Solomun+1” Pacha nights. Since three years we are having amazing parties in this club. And in this third year it almost exploded. The club was packed all season from May to October, unreal atmosphere, crazy nights with even more crazy afterparties.

Who were some of your favorite guest DJs?

This is a tough question since I only invite one guest per night I only invite really strong artists who don’t disappoint. But some of my favorite nights this summer were with DJ Butch, Michael Mayer, Mano le Tough, Sven Väth, Oliver Huntemann, Ame, Dubfire, Dixon, DJ Koze.

How has it been playing outside of Pacha at parties like ENTER and Circoloco?

It was great, I mean, this year I wanted to play around a little bit more on the Island and besides ENTER and Circoloco I also did a swop with Sven Väth and played Cocoon. All three parties are really strong here on the Island and of course clubs like Amnesia, Space or DC10 are speaking for themselves. And at ENTER I had the chance to play all night long on this beautiful Space terrace… an amazing experience. And that’s the great thing in Ibiza: you have so much variety and choice. That’s one of a kind.

Tell us about this new EP from Stimming & Johannes Brecht.

With Johannes Brecht teaming up with Diynamic family, Martin Stimming finally has a new friend to play with lots of different gear together, haha. No, seriously: Johannes is a real artist’s artist. Studying jazz, playing instruments, being Tonmeister at the classical orchestra and super innovative in electronic music. And with these skills he is the perfect partner for our Dr. Sound, Stimming.

And I think they really did something special with their first EP and I am pretty sure that this was not the last collaboration of these two outstanding artists.

How did you go about making your edit of "Breathe!"?

I love the original track as is; I played it several times. But for some special sets I had the feeling it would be more fluid with some small changes, which I did, and I think it worked out quite well.

What other music can we expect from you in the near future?

One of my most played Ibiza tracks just came out on Island Records. It’s a remix I did for a small UK band, which I played pretty much the whole summer and now it is finally released. It’s called Whilk & Misky “Clap Your Hands” (Solomun Remix). And when I will take a holiday break early next year again then I will concentrate on doing new music. But first I have a little touring on my agenda where I will hopefully find some first rough musical ideas on the way.
